Neol Davies

Neol Davies was born in Coventry in the 1950s and achieved success with The Selecter, one of the bands who became well known as part of 2Tone Records. The independent record label was designed and launched by Jerry Dammers in 1979 with the release of the first Double A Sided single Gangsters vs The Selecter. Neol wrote all of The Selecter’s hits and most of the album songs. He also played guitar and sang backing vocals. He has played in and formed many bands over a lifetime of being involved with music. He has taught the guitar in the schools of Coventry and Warwickshire for 31 years and hosted a radio show on Hillz FM called “From Ska To Reggae”.

The Selecter

The Selecter began life as an instrumental track, originally called 'The Kingston Affair' and first recorded in 1977. The track became 'The Selecter' when it was featured as the flipside to Gangsters in 1979 and only then became a band, going on to be one of the most successful ska bands of the 2-Tone era.

The 2-Tone Story

2-Tone was the label founded by Jerry Dammers, taking its name from the two-tone Tonik suits worn by English mods of the 1970s and bringing a cultural movement to life through bands including The Selecter, The Specials, Madness and The Beat.

Produced by Neol Davies

Neol has amassed more than 150 writing, performing and producing over his career, including his latest collaboration 'Come Around' by Bella Deanie, featuring Ossie Holt and Daddy Woody, as featured in the BBC Documentary 2-Tone; The Sound of Coventry
